Spironolactone is a medication that acts on androgens, or male hormones, in the female body. By blocking the effect of acne-causing androgens, spironolactone can be very helpful for hormonal acne after 2-3 months of consistent use.

Common side effects include breast tenderness, mild headaches, irritability, fatigue, menstrual spotting or irregularity, heavier periods, stomach upset, decreased libido and breast enlargement. Most mild side effects tend to improve with time.

Metformin is an insulin sensitizer and the first line treatment for Diabetes. In PCOS, Metformin can reduce androgen levels globally by improving the insulin sensitivity of ovaries. Metformin may lead to slight weight loss.
