More common side effects:
- Acne at the application site the most frequently reported effect. Often mild and may improve as your skin adjusts. Cleansing the area before application can help.
Less common side effects:
- Burning, stinging, or bleeding skin at the application site, particularly with frequent or thick application.
- Chapped or red lips if applied near the mouth area.
- Hair bumps (folliculitis) small inflamed bumps around hair follicles.
- Numbness or tingling of the skin at the application site.
- Dryness or irritation at the application site.
Rare but reported:
- Rash or allergic skin reactions.
- Cardiovascular effects irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) has been very rarely reported, though the systemic absorption from topical eflornithine is generally low.
What to do:
- Most side effects respond to small adjustments applying a thinner layer, changing application timing, or pausing temporarily to let the skin recover.
- Continue your usual skincare gently. If your skin is reactive in the first weeks, use gentler cleansers and moisturizers and skip other active ingredients (retinols, exfoliating acids) in the same area temporarily.
- Message your clinician if side effects are bothersome, persistent, or new symptoms develop.
Seek immediate care for signs of significant allergic reaction (facial swelling, difficulty breathing, severe rash spreading beyond the application site) or irregular heartbeat.
