How is HairPlusPlus different from oral Minoxidil?

Both are prescription treatments for PCOS-pattern hair loss. The difference is in how they're delivered and what they contain.

Here's the clean breakdown:

Oral Minoxidil is a single-ingredient prescription tablet. The active ingredient is minoxidil — the same active ingredient as the well-known over-the-counter topical product Rogaine. Oral Minoxidil works systemically (throughout the body via the bloodstream) rather than just at the application site. Taken once daily.

HairPlusPlus is Oana's combination topical spray. It contains three active ingredients applied directly to the scalp:

  • Minoxidil increases blood flow to hair follicles and extends the growth phase of the hair cycle
  • Retinoic Acid (Tretinoin) enhances minoxidil's effectiveness by activating skin enzymes that minoxidil needs to work
  • Latanoprost originally FDA-approved as an eye drop for glaucoma, found to increase hair density when applied to the scalp

What this means in practice:

  • HairPlusPlus works locally; Oral Minoxidil works systemically. HairPlusPlus is applied to the scalp where you want hair growth; Oral Minoxidil reaches all hair follicles in the body. This affects both efficacy and side effect profile.
  • HairPlusPlus combines three mechanisms; Oral Minoxidil uses one. The combination in HairPlusPlus addresses different parts of the hair growth cycle simultaneously, which can produce more meaningful results for some women than minoxidil alone.
  • Oral Minoxidil is once-daily and simple to remember. HairPlusPlus is once-daily at bedtime, applied directly to the scalp. Both require consistent use to work.
  • Side effects differ. Oral Minoxidil's systemic delivery means it can cause systemic side effects (fluid retention, increased heart rate, unwanted body hair). HairPlusPlus's topical delivery means side effects are usually localized to the scalp (mild redness, scaling, irritation).
  • Many women use both. Oral Minoxidil and HairPlusPlus aren't competing options for everyone — they work on related but distinct mechanisms, and your clinician may recommend combining them for more complete coverage of the hair loss picture.

Your Oana clinician will recommend which is the better fit (or whether a combination makes sense) based on your case, your medical history, and what you've already tried.
