Do I need a prescription for oral Minoxidil?

Yes. Oral Minoxidil is prescription-only — both because of its original FDA approval as a blood pressure medication and because it requires clinical evaluation to prescribe at the low doses used for hair loss.

You don't need to bring a prescription with you to start. Submit your Oana medical intake, and if Oral Minoxidil is appropriate for your case, your Oana clinician will write the prescription as part of approving your treatment plan. The prescription is sent electronically to Oana's partner state-licensed compounding pharmacy, which prepares the tablets at the prescribed dose and ships them discreetly to your door.

A few notes on the prescription process:

  • The dose is determined by your clinician. Oral Minoxidil for hair loss is typically prescribed at doses significantly lower than the original blood pressure doses. Your clinician will determine the right starting dose for your case based on your medical history, current medications, and the pattern of hair loss you're treating.
  • Dosing is sometimes titrated. Many clinicians start at a low dose and increase gradually based on how you respond and tolerate the medication.
  • If you've previously taken topical Minoxidil, mention this in your intake. Your clinician will discuss whether Oral Minoxidil is a better fit for your case, whether to combine the two, or whether a different approach makes sense.
