How long does it take to see results with oral Minoxidil?

Hair regrowth takes time, even when treatment is working. Here's a realistic timeline for Oral Minoxidil:

  • Weeks 1 to 8: A temporary shedding phase is common. Many women experience an increase in shedding when they first start Minoxidil — sometimes alarmingly so. This is the hair cycle resetting, with older hairs in the resting phase being pushed out to make room for new growth. This is usually a sign the treatment is working, not failing. It typically resolves within several weeks.
  • Months 2 to 3: Reduced shedding becomes noticeable. Many women describe seeing fewer hairs in the shower, on the pillow, and in the brush — even before they see any visible thickness change.
  • Months 3 to 6: Initial regrowth becomes visible. New, finer hairs growing in at the crown and along the part line. Hair may start to feel slightly fuller, ponytails slightly thicker.
  • Months 6 to 12: More meaningful results. Visible improvements in density and overall hair thickness. The hairs that have been regrowing for several months have had time to grow long enough to contribute visibly.
  • Beyond 12 months: Continued improvements and maintenance. Many women continue to see incremental improvements through the second year of treatment. After that, the treatment typically maintains the gains rather than producing dramatic new growth.

A few important things to know:

  • Consistency matters more than intensity. Skipping doses or stopping for stretches significantly slows results. The most effective protocol is the one you actually maintain.
  • Discontinuing treatment reverses the effect. If you stop taking Oral Minoxidil, the hair gains typically fade over several months as follicles return to their pre-treatment state. This is an ongoing treatment, not a one-time intervention.
  • Individual response varies. Some women see faster, more meaningful results than the timeline above; others see slower, more modest changes. A small percentage see results that don't justify continued treatment.

If you're past the expected timeline and you're not seeing changes — particularly past the 6-month mark with no visible improvement — message your Oana clinician. Dose adjustments, adding a complementary treatment (like HairPlusPlus topically or Spironolactone for the androgen side), or reassessing the protocol are normal next steps.
