Oral Minoxidil is generally considered for women experiencing hair loss who haven't seen the results they hoped for from topical treatments, or who prefer the simplicity of a once-daily tablet over twice-daily topical application.
A few specific situations where Oral Minoxidil tends to be a good fit:
- PCOS-pattern hair loss (female pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia). This is the most common type of hair loss in women with PCOS — gradual thinning at the crown and along the part line, driven by androgen sensitivity at the follicle level.
- Women who've used topical Minoxidil and plateaued. Many women have already tried topical Minoxidil (Rogaine) and seen partial improvement. Oral Minoxidil can sometimes produce more meaningful results because of systemic delivery to all hair follicles.
- Women who haven't been able to maintain a twice-daily topical routine. Topical Minoxidil requires consistent application to the scalp twice a day, every day. For women whose lives or routines make this difficult to maintain, the once-daily oral form removes the adherence barrier.
- Women managing hair loss as part of broader PCOS care. Oral Minoxidil is often used alongside other PCOS treatments — particularly anti-androgens like Spironolactone, which addresses the hormonal driver while Minoxidil works on the follicles directly.
Other types of hair loss may also respond to Oral Minoxidil. Your clinician will evaluate your specific case and determine whether it's a good fit.
A note on contraindications. Oral Minoxidil isn't appropriate for everyone. Women with certain cardiovascular conditions, kidney conditions, or who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive in the immediate future may not be candidates. Your Oana clinician will review your medical history during the intake.
