Yes. In fact, the two often work well together — and many Oana clinicians actively recommend this combination for women with PCOS-pattern acne, unwanted hair, or hair loss who are also looking for reliable contraception.
A few reasons the combination is common:
- Spironolactone and pregnancy don't mix. Because Spironolactone can affect fetal development (see the question above), reliable contraception during treatment is important if you're sexually active and not trying to conceive. Birth control pills are one of the most reliable forms of contraception, and they're a clinically straightforward fit alongside Spironolactone.
- Birth control pills also have anti-androgen effects. Combined hormonal birth control pills suppress ovarian androgen production, which means they work on the same underlying mechanism Spironolactone works on — just from a different angle. The two together often produce more meaningful improvements in acne, unwanted hair, and hair loss than either one alone.
- Birth control pills can address cycle irregularity directly. Spironolactone affects cycles indirectly (see Can Spironolactone regulate my menstrual cycle?), but birth control pills regulate cycles directly. If cycle predictability matters to you, the combination addresses cycle regularity in a way Spironolactone alone often doesn't.
- Some side effects of Spironolactone like spotting and cycle irregularity — are smoothed out by birth control pills. Spironolactone can sometimes cause mid-cycle spotting or unpredictable bleeding patterns. Combined hormonal birth control pills often resolve these.
What to know about combining the two:
- Your Oana clinician should know about your current birth control. Mention it in the medical intake. If you're starting both around the same time, your clinician can coordinate the timing.
- Birth control pills are typically prescribed separately. Oana doesn't currently prescribe combined hormonal contraceptive pills directly — your birth control prescription would usually come from your OB-GYN or primary care provider. If you're starting Spironolactone, your Oana clinician can discuss the contraception conversation with you and coordinate with your other providers if helpful.
- Other forms of contraception work too. If you're using IUDs, implants, condoms, or other non-pill methods, mention this in the intake. The key requirement is reliable contraception during Spironolactone treatment — not specifically birth control pills.
