What is Eflornithine 12%?

Eflornithine 12% is a prescription cream containing Eflornithine 12% as a single active ingredient. It's the same medication sold under the FDA-approved brand name Vaniqa, and Oana offers it as a compounded option for women whose case calls for the single-ingredient formulation.

A few key things to know:

  • One mechanism, one ingredient. Eflornithine works by blocking the enzyme Ornithine Decarboxylase inside hair follicles, which slows the rate at which follicles can produce new hair. That's the single mechanism — no additional ingredients addressing other skin concerns.
  • FDA-approved for unwanted facial hair. Eflornithine has FDA approval specifically for the reduction of unwanted facial hair in women — meaning the evidence base for its use is well-established.
  • Topical only. Like HairlessHype, it's applied to the skin where you're treating unwanted hair. Not taken by mouth, not absorbed systemically in significant amounts.
  • Compounded by a state-licensed pharmacy. Oana's Eflornithine 12% is prepared by a licensed compounding pharmacy and ships discreetly to your door.

When Eflornithine 12% is typically the right choice.

  • You don't need azelaic acid's tone-evening or anti-inflammatory effects. If your skin is otherwise calm — no surface acne, no uneven tone, no inflammation in the treatment areas — the additional ingredients in HairlessHype may not be adding much for you.
  • You're already using other products for skin tone or acne. Layering HairlessHype's azelaic acid with other actives you're already on can cause unnecessary skin reactivity. Eflornithine 12% gives you just the hair-growth-slowing effect without overlap.
  • You've previously tried Eflornithine (or Vaniqa specifically) and responded well. If you know the active ingredient works for you, the Standalone option keeps the protocol simple.
  • You prefer a simpler formulation. Fewer ingredients means a cleaner ingredient list for women with sensitive skin or specific ingredient preferences.

Eflornithine 12% is prescription-only. Your Oana clinician will determine whether it's the right fit for your case during the medical intake.
