HairlessHype works through three connected mechanisms — each of its three active ingredients addresses a different aspect of how unwanted hair develops and shows up on the skin.
Eflornithine. Blocks the action of an enzyme called Ornithine Decarboxylase inside hair follicles. This enzyme is part of the pathway hair follicles use to produce new hair. By blocking the enzyme, eflornithine slows the rate at which follicles can grow new hair. Over time, this means:
- New growth comes in more slowly
- The hairs that do grow are often finer and lighter
- The cumulative visible hair on the treated area gradually decreases
Eflornithine does not remove the hair that's already there, and it doesn't cause hair to fall out. It works on what's coming next, not on what's already grown.
Azelaic Acid. A skincare ingredient with several relevant effects:
- Slows keratin production in the hair follicle, which can weaken the structure of new hairs as they grow in. The result is finer, less coarse hair.
- Reduces local inflammation in the skin, which matters because PCOS-pattern hair growth often comes with inflammatory skin changes (redness around follicles, surface acne in the same areas as the unwanted hair).
- Evens skin tone. Many women with PCOS-pattern hirsutism also have post-inflammatory pigmentation in the same areas — darker spots where hair has been plucked or where surface acne has resolved. Azelaic acid can help fade these over time.
Metformin. Best known as an oral medication for insulin resistance, but topical metformin has documented effects in the skin itself:
- Reduces local inflammation, similar to azelaic acid but through a different pathway.
- Affects local insulin signaling in the skin, which has indirect effects on androgen activity in skin oil glands and follicles.
- Slows cell growth in some skin contexts, which can complement eflornithine's effect on hair follicles.
The combination matters because each ingredient works at a different point in the same overall picture — and using them together typically produces more meaningful results than using any one alone.
A note on what HairlessHype is not for. It's a topical treatment that slows new growth — it's not a hair removal method. You'll likely still want to remove existing hair through your usual method (shaving, waxing, threading, laser). HairlessHype works alongside hair removal, not as a replacement for it. Many women find that as HairlessHype takes effect, hair removal becomes meaningfully less frequent and the hair they're removing is finer.
